The Story Behind the Stove

From the Savannah in Arima to a Jamaican Table.

Our Trinidadian roots run to Arima, where our Grandfather was raised on historic Pro Queen Street, right across from the velodrome and the savannah. In Trinidad a savannah isn't a grassland—it's the town's open ground: free to everyone, protected by law so it can never be sold off, where every evening a "sweat" of pickup football or cricket breaks out and anyone can lime under a tree.

Our father was second-generation—Jamaican mother, Trini father, Jamaican through-and-through—but holiday trips home dropped him straight into that world: football sweats on the savannah, Granny and Granddad across the street, Aunt Vi and Aunt Gwen next door, and the Clevelands a stone's throw away, fussing over him like half a dozen grand aunts.

Those visits tasted of homemade coconut ice cream, Christmas pastelles and payme steaming in banana leaves, doubles straight from Piarco with Uncle Brian, fresh currant rolls from the bakery—and above all, warm buss-up-shut torn by hand, scooping up every drop of rich curried channa.

RotiStreak is our way of reclaiming a small piece of that heritage. Flaky paratha and slow-simmered channa from our Pro Queen Street roots, brought to a Jamaican table.

"We'd like to gift you with some of that flavour. Fresh flaky paratha and slow-simmered channa, made for a proper meal."
